The Young Adult Program operates throughout the state of Minnesota. Projects are
also completed in Wisconsin, Iowa, North and South Dakota.
- The program operates with 17 crews, divided into four “districts”. Each region has a District Manager that is responsible for the scheduling and oversight of the crews.
- Crews are composed of 4 to 5 members including a crew leader. All crew participants are between ages 18 and 25.
- Projects crews complete can range from one to many days or months and should support a public resource using public funds. Projects on private land must have public support or public funds associated with the project.

What is the crew's daily schedule? - Crews work ten hour days, Monday through Thursday from mid-February to mid-December.
- Crews report to their crew office at 7:00 a.m. and return by 5:30 p.m.
- Crews take 30 minutes for lunch.
- Crews require time to load/unload and maintain equipment daily.
- Drive time to and from work sites are part of the ten hour day.
What if the project is far from a crew's home office?
- Since MCC crew offices are not always located close to the project site, crews are available to camp on or near the work site. This provides the project sponsor with more work accomplished, due to reduced drive
time.
- Crews camp in warm or mild temperatures. Crews are equipped with all of the necessary camping equipment.
- In cold weather, crews stay in the least expensive hotel closest to the project site.
- Project sponsor can negotiate food and lodging costs into contract.
How much training do the crews have?
- Crew members receive technical and personal skill training and
professional certifications throughout their term of service. Approximately
15-20% of the service term is dedicated to training.
- As a project sponsor, it is important to allow for and incorporate education into the project. Some oversight of the crew may be necessary depending on how technical the project is.
- Since crews learn by doing, education can be in the form of site introductions, ecological and social benefits of the project, and other project specific skills.

What is MCC's connection with AmeriCorps? |
- AmeriCorps is the national service movement that addresses the challenges in our nation’s communities through dedicated service of its members.
- All MCC crew members are enrolled in AmeriCorps and have committed to a specific term of service. Service term is typically 10.5 months, February through December.
- Crew members are considered participants (not employees) and receive a living allowance (not an hourly wage) and an education award upon completion of their term of service.
- Crew members enroll in the program to give back to their communities while gaining a strong foundation of marketable skills for careers in natural resource and associated fields.

How is MCC involved in Emergency Response? |
- MCC crews participate in emergency response and recovery activities to help those impacted by disaster.
- If an emergency occurs, MCC may need to pull crews from work locations to assist in emergency work, including wildland firefighting.
- MCC Crews may be placed on an “on-call” status when fire danger is high or when a natural disaster has occurred and the likelihood of deployment is high.
- Every effort will be made to accommodate the needs of the project host when
a project is time sensitive.
