The Minnesota Conservation Corps (MCC) is recruiting Crew Leaders for its Summer Youth Program at St. Croix State Park near Hinckley, MN. Crew Leaders play a key role in achieving MCC goals. The responsibilities include: to supervise, motivate, direct, and coordinate a crew of young people in a rigorous program of work, education, and training. They maintain discipline and positive crew morale, build teamwork among crewmembers, enforce the standards of behavior of MCC, and adhere to the program goals and mission.Crew Leaders work alongside corpsmembers to set the standard and pace of work.
Wilderness Crew Leaders lead groups of 6-8 youth on extended "spike" projects that are often in remote locations. Spikes are projects completed outside of the residential base site where crews camp in tents, prepare their own meals, and complete work projects. Spike locations in past years have been at the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Voyageurs National Park, Superior National Forest, and other land management agencies and non-profit nature centers. Crew’s complete projects such as trail construction and maintenance, foot bridge building, landscaping, campsite development, invasive species removal, etc.
Crew Leaders also facilitate with educational and recreational activities on the weekends, during spike trips, and after the workday. They provide discipline and positive crew morale, build teamwork among crew members, enforce the standards of MCC behavior, and adhere to the program goals and mission. Crew Leaders are responsible for encouraging the development of good work habits and presenting on basic skills such as work safety, environmental education and leave no trace.
Wilderness Crew Leaders also facilitate on-going leadership development for the members of the crew. This includes implementing leadership opportunities, giving performance feedback, and facilitating leadership development activities with the entire crew.
LOCATION: Residential site based out of St. Croix State Park, Hinckley, MN. Crews will also travel throughout the state of Minnesota.
QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will be mature and have the ability to motivate, discipline, organize and direct a crew in work. Crew Leaders should have experience in supervision, organization, team building, leadership development, and backcountry camping; must have effective communication skills to work with youth, coworkers, and supervisors; must be able to explain and demonstrate safe work practices as well as keep records of work completed and youth behaviors. Candidates must be able to do outdoor physical labor, including repetitive bending and lifting of 20 pounds or more and carrying 50 pounds or more over uneven terrain. A valid driver’s license and good driving record is required. The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) will perform background checks before offers of employment are made.
BENEFITS: $330 per week (Crew Leaders with Interpretive Sign Language skills may earn up to $360 per week). Free room and board will be provided. An AmeriCorps Education Award of $2362.50. Staff will receive Wilderness First Aid certification.
