For the third year, Corps crew and staff members volunteered with Project AWARE. This year’s clean up took place on the Big Sioux River the week of July 12-19. One crew assisted with managing overall logistics for the entire week ― shuttling volunteers, canoes, trailers and gear, as well as assisting with campground logistics, hauling/sorting trash and floating on the river to serve as guides and assist volunteers. Another 50 Corps field crew, individual placement and staff members hauled trash from the river for a couple days, many as part of their mid-year retreat. The collective effort was impressive! During the week, 388 volunteers from 11 states, ages 2-80, paddled and cleaned 91 miles of river. They removed 28.8 tons of trash, 95% of which will be recycled.
