MCC crews end year with
Habit for Humanity home construction MCC young adult corpsmembers helped build three townhomes for families in need as part of a Habitat for Humanity community service project on November 28 and 29. The service work, including painting, insulating and siding, wrapped up the program year for Central and North Eastern District corpsmembers. Crews worked mostly outside in below-freezing temperatures but they agreed it was worth the effort. “This siding needed to go up immediately before winter storms set in,” said corpsmember Liz Parent. Her hard work was inspired by meeting one of the future homeowners, a quadriplegic who “was grateful for our help,” according to Parent. “He was in need of a home that was both accessible and affordable. We were all proud to help improve his quality of life.” Beside natural resource restoration, every MCC crew engages in community service as part of their year-long AmeriCorps experience. Habitat work and other service projects help members break away from their usual routines. “I was doing all sorts of new things like measuring siding, cutting angles and using a nail gun,” Parent said," It was awesome!” MCC extends thanks to Habitat for Humanity for providing this opportunity to corpsmembers as well as continuing to provide great service for Minnesotans. |
