Honoring the CCC Legacy - August 9, 2007

After years of work, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Chapters 33 & 119, MN State Parks and MCC have secured a permanent location for the “CCC Worker” statue at Gooseberry Falls State Park. The statue will be installed in front of the CCC built stone wall.

"CCC Worker" StatueDuring the Great Depression, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt created the CCC to provide economic relief for families and to preserve the country’s natural resources. Over 86,000 young men in Minnesota, and three million young men across the country worked in the program building structures, planting forests and much more. These great efforts by the CCC are what inspired today’s Minnesota Conservation Corps as well as the Corps movement across the country. Today, there are over 113 service and conservation corps in the nation.

To honor all of the young men who served in the CCC in Minnesota, the placement of this statue will be celebrated with a dedication ceremony August 9th, 2007. The placement of this statue came at a perfect time as we are approaching the 75th anniversary of the CCC (the program ran from 1933 – 1942).

CCC alumni are encouraged to attend this event and share their stories with today’s younger generation of Corps members at MCC. This will also be a chance for people all over the state to share their appreciation for the work of the CCC. Please join us for this momentous occasion:

MCC and Will Steger on Today Show

Will Steger with his pupsArctic explorer and global warming expert Will Steger will be working with an MCC Summer Youth Crew on his homestead in Ely. The project will include rock wall building and trail maintenance for gardens. This exciting opportunity will give MCC youth a chance to learn about the Global Warming 101 initiative and the Will Steger Foundation, an education and advocacy organization.

As a result of this project the NBC Today Show will feature Steger and the MCC crew in a segment on global warming and the efforts of the Steger Foundation. The program will air in mid August; exact date yet to be determined. So make sure to stay tuned to see MCC on NBC!

MCC would like to thank Will Steger and the Today Show for this great opportunity.

Mid-year Retreat Rejuvenates YAP Crews

Young Adult Program Corpsmembers from throughout the state joined together for the annual mid-year retreat at St. Croix State Park. The three day event took place July 2nd through the 4th. The goal of the retreat was to build corps community by reuniting state-wide participants, gather input for future program improvement, and provide education.

Corpsmember sawing log at Corps OlympicsThe Young Adult Retreat is another opportunity for corpsmembers to learn about conservation and natural resources beyond their fieldwork. Corpsmembers participated in seminars hosted by experts in a range of fields including renewable energy, outdoor photography, tree identification, GPS, silviculture, and civic engagement.

Since Young Adult crews complete natural resource projects all across Minnesota, the retreat served as an opportunity for all Corpsmembers to come together, share experiences, learn from each other, and celebrate accomplishments.

According to Program Associate, Candice McElroy, “The retreat is an important occasion for all corpsmembers to reunite. It serves as a great reminder that each crew is not operating alone, but as a part of a unified effort across the entire state. We want to acknowledge and celebrate each crew’s great work thus far and rejuvenate them for the second half of the program year.”

MCC would like to thank all of the presenters (see sidebar) that volunteered their time to share with our group as well as Memorial Blood Center for hosting the blood drive.
