Crew Member Orientation

MCC Crew Member OrientationOver 60 new MCC crew members arrived at Camp Ihduhapi on Monday, February 6, to start their orientation to the Young Adult Program. The talented group of 18-25 year olds are beginning their year of service and training in MCC's Young Adult Program.

Crew member orientation is an opportunity for all 2006 Young Adult corpsmembers to meet each other and prepare for the year. The corpsmembers have been hired on to specific crews throughout Minnesota, and orientation is one of the few times during the year that all of the crews are together.

Following the first week of corps wide orientation, crews report to their individual districts for specific skill training that will be the backbone of their year in the field. The crews will then begin work projects on February 20.

Cedar Creek Natural History Area

Since its transition to a non-profit in 2003, MCC has had the opportunity to work with many new project hosts, which continues to strengthen our programs, corpsmember experience and Minnesota communities. One example of a new project host is Cedar Creek Natural History Area.

Cedar Creek Natural History Area is a large ecological research site in central Minnesota with natural habitats that represent the entire state. Central Young Adult MCC crews have been involved with multiple projects including removal of Black Locust and Buckthorn as well as assisting with preparing for and carrying out prescribed burns and other habitat improvement projects.

Cedar Creek is owned and operated by the University of Minnesota in cooperation with the Minnesota Academy of Science. Cedar Creek is dedicated to understanding the planet's ecosystems and how they are changing under human pressures. Learn more about Cedar Creek Natural History area at their website.

MCC Represented at National Conference

Pete Bonk speaking in front of crowd

MCC was one of over 50 corps at the recent National Association for Service and Conservation Corps (NASCC) Forum.  The annual NASCC Forum is held in Washington DC and brings together corps from across the US to share ideas, build programs and strengthen the corps movement.

The forum included workshops ranging from inclusion of corpsmembers with disabilities to going international. MCC staff members Len Price, Rolf Hagberg, and Pete Bonk were invited to sit on different panels as part of the forum. Participants also spent a day at the US Capitol speaking to their congressional members about pieces of legislation that benefits corps.
