Emergency Response

All MCC Young Adult Program corpsmembers are available for immediate emergency and disaster response mobilizations. MCC is the largest AmeriCorps program in the state and the only one with corpsmembers trained and equipped for immediate response.

  • On August 18, 2007 SE Minnesota was overwhelmed with flash flooding from record rainfall.  In a 24 hour period, 9 - 15 inches of rain fell on an area encompassing 5 counties with steep bluffs and rivers feeding the upper reaches of the Mississippi river.  The event caused widespread flooding and damage to several heavily populated areas, resulting in 6 deaths.  MCC took the lead in coordination with the State CNCS office and the Federal CNCS office to assist the state with the process of deploying AmeriCorps Teams into the region.  MCC contributed 62 crew days (3,130 hours) to aid those in need and helped to move the process of other AmeriCorps Teams into the region.   • In February 2007, 20 corpsmembers mobilized to assist communities in Florida and Missouri. 10 members deployed to Orlando, Florida to assist in clean-up and recovery efforts following the devastating tornadoes. Another group of 10 corpsmembers deployed to Marshfield, Missouri to perform hazard tree and debris removal following two major ice storms that swept through the state in December and January.   • In the October and November of 2006, a selected crew of corpsmembers traveled to Mississippi to aid in Katrina rebuild and recovery efforts as part of the Gulf Coast Recovery Corps organized by the Corps Network. Read more here (+photos).

  • MCC is involved in roughly 40 wildfires statewide on an annual basis, totalling over 11,000 hours of direct assistance. MCC corpsmembers represent roughly 1/4 of the states trained wildfire response team.
  • In October and November of 2005, 14 corpsmembers managed a donation warehouse operation for 30 days in New Iberia, LA in response to Hurricane Katrina.
  • MCC crews provided immediate and sustained response to three major Minnesota tornados; the St. Peter, Granite Falls and Comfrey tornados.

  • Crews provided assistance to the Red River and Rosso floods by filling sandbags and assisting in clean-up activities following the floods.

  • MCC corpsmembers participated in search and recovery efforts for the Space Shuttle Columbia diasaster in 2002 by searching fields for debris in Texas following the disaster.
