The main objectives of the YCC program were to accomplish needed conservation work on public lands; to provide gainful employment for 15 through 18 year olds from all segments of society; and to develop in participating youth an understanding and appreciateion of the Nation's natural environment and heritage.

Misty sunset fills my eyes;

Picking blueberries,
Battling the bugs,
Setting up camp blindfolded,
Eating dirt,
Collapsed tents on a rainy day,
Wet sleeping bags,
Shooting the rapids in a canoe,
Hiking up a mountain,
Building a trail,
Working in the pits,
Sitting around a campfire,
Stargazing,
Finding an eagle feather,
Sighting a moose, a bear, perhaps a hawk,
Watching the reflection of dawn
on a lake as the sun rises
and listening to the haunting, unforgettable
cry of a loon at dusk.
You are my friend
for we have worked, laughed, cried, and lived together.

"The Superior National Forest was the site for a very spirited, all deaf YCC work crew during the 1980 season. This enterprising group of six enrollees spent 8 weeks building the Blackstone Secret Trail. The 5-mile trail, designed for hiking and skiing, connects Blackstone, Secret, and Ennis Lakes which lie outside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA) near Ely."
