Award Winning Project from 1996
The Rochester Flood Recovery crew cleared and burned 16 acres of the Lake Florence basin near Stewartville after the dam blew out and the lake drained. The crew planted 2,050 oak, ash, and maple seedlings with the help from other MCC crews and CCC alumni. The crew seeded 14 park acres to native prarie and laid 2700 yards of sod. The crew installed 100 willow posts to stabilize the lake shore.

The Minnesota Shade Tree Advisory Committee (MSTAC) presented the 1996 MSTAC Stewardship Certificate of Recognition to MCC on March 27, 1997. The Stewardship Certificate is awarded to governmental entities demostrating responsible urban management. The project was also nominated for the outstanding partnership award, outstanding arbor day celebration award, special merit award, and achievement certificate.

White Pine!
-The Roseau River WMA crew worked to restore the White Pine to the Agassiz Lowlands, which marks the western limit of Natural White Pine in Minnesota. The crew worked on a project restoring White Pine to the Landscape and to protect trees from hungry deer and hares, the crew built exclosures to keep critter out until the trees were tall enough to fend for themselves.

-The Virginia MCC crew led the way in White Pine management. Beginning in March and continuing to July, the crew pruned White Pine growing in the Side Lake area for the Virginia foresters.

"Contributing is indelicate. You take a risk when you are willing to play as if you make a difference, as if your life makes a difference, as if life itself makes a difference. At that level the game gets fast, difficult, and even a little dangerous."

-Erhard
